On the 1910 - 1930 Census, he lived with his parents and siblings in Dobson. He was married to Bessie Lynch on November 25, 1933, in Stokes County, NC. He was 23 years old, and Bessie was 22. Bessie was born on August 30, 2011, in Stokes County, to Drewry “Drew” William Lynch and Martha Elizabeth “Sissy” (Martin) Lynch. In 1934, when Viola was born, they were living in Pilot Mountain, Surry County, North Carolina. When Junior was born in 1936, they were living in Guilford County, NC. In 1937, Troy was employed as a laborer at WCUNC (Women's College of the University of North Carolina, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG)). Their residential address is not listed. When Louise was born in 1939, they were living in Guilford County, NC. On the 1940 Census, he and Bessie, and their three children in the Rock Creek Township of Guilford County, NC, in the area south of Highway U.S. 70. On October 16, 1940, he registered for the World War II draft. He was living on R.F.D. 1 in Whitsett, NC at the time. He was 5'10", 140 pounds, and had blue eyes and brown hair, and was employed by Rock Creek Dairy. It is believed that this is when the family lived on Judge Adams Road, between Little Alamance Creek and Interstate 40/85. As of 2023, the rock foundation of the house was still in place. In 1941, Coy was born in Guilford County. It is not known if the family was living in Whitsett or Guilford College (town) at the time. In 1943, the family was living in the town of Guilford College, NC, now part of Greensboro. Troy worked as a feeder at WCUNC. By 1945, when Paul was born, the family had moved back to Stokes County. They lived in King off Trinity Church Road. By 1949, Troy and family had moved to Guilford Dairy in Greensboro, NC. The family lived there, and he worked on the farm. James was born there. On the 1950 Census, Troy, Bessie, and their six children lived on Ingle's Dairy off Springwood Church Road in the Rock Creek Township of Guilford County, NC. The census states that his highest level of education was 3rd grade. Troy's nephew, Frank Doby, remembered this: "They lived and worked on the Ingle's Dairy. That was my first memory. I can still see Viola and Louise running all over the place wearing long dresses and barefoot. Uncle Troy's family were half wild, fun loving, and always happy. I don’t know what work they did there just that they lived there in an unpainted two-story house." In 1950, after the 1950 Census, the family moved to 1430 Rock Creek Dairy Road, Whitsett, NC, when he lived until he passed away. The property was around 8 acres and had at least 4 fields on it. He raised the family's vegetables along with chickens, pigs, and cows. He was also a carpenter. He built the concrete forms for some of the buildings at the Girl Scout Camp that was across the road. He also helped build the concrete forms for the walls of the underground government communications building on Highway, N.C. 61 near Frieden's Church in Gibsonville, Guilford County, NC. He also worked on Rock Creek Dairy, along with many of his brothers and his son Troy Jr. Sometime before 1953, Troy had attended a revival at a church. One day, while plowing in the field, he audibly heard God speak to him. He dropped to his knees, prayed, and got saved right there in the field. He immediately stopped drinking and started attending church with his family on a regular and dedicated basis. He was ordained into the ministry on 18 Oct 1953 at Rock Creek Baptist Church, Whitsett, NC, by Rev. Gilmer Bernard Dodson. In 1956 some members of Rock Creek Baptist Church wanted to move closer to the new interstate (I-85), to attract more members. The vote did not pass, so some of the families split off and formed Whitsett Baptist Church (now First Baptist of Whitsett). In the 1963, the church began construction on its current building. Troy was a carpenter and helped build the building. In 1983 the church celebrated its 20th anniversary in the current location. Notes from the service list the various offices held by Troy: Charter/founding member, Deacon, Chairman of the Deacon Board, Young Peoples' class teacher, Adult Class teacher, Adult Class assistant teach, Usher, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, Christmas Treat Committee, Preached every 4th Sunday, and helped the Pastor in many ways, especially visiting the sick. In 1965, Troy was ordained as a Pastor and served at Johnson Baptist Church in Browns Summit, Guilford County, for four years, after which, he returned to Whitsett Baptist Church and continued to serve there. He was the first person ordained as a Pastor by Whitsett Baptist Church. After he completed his Pastoral at Johnson Baptist Church, he became an evangelist, preaching at revivals and camp meetings in North and South Carolina (possibly other states). He and Bessie regularly attended the Greer Tent Meeting in Greer, South Carolina. On 25 Nov 1983 the family, along with a large group of friends and church members joined Troy and Bessie to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. The reception was held at the Whitsett Community Center (now Whitsett Town Hall). On September 14, 1989, Troy had a heart attack due to Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease. He was rushed to Moses Cone Memorial Hospital where he passed away. He was buried in Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington, NC.

Funeral will be at 3pm, Sunday, at Whitsett Baptist Church. Burial will be at Alamance Memorial Park. He was a native of Surry County and an evangelist, who was ordained to preach at the Whitsett Baptist Church. He was a former pastor of Johnston Baptist Church in McLeansville and he was a member of Victory Baptist Church. He was a retired builder. Surviving are wife, Bessie Lynch Doby), sons, Troy Lee Doby Jr. of Whitsett, Coy Wayne Doby of Burlington, Paul William Doby (1945-2020), James Thomas Doby, both of Gibsonville; two daughters, Mrs. Gaynor Whitesell of Gibsonville, Mrs. Archie Capps of Graham; brothers, Claude Doby, Marley Doby, both of Burlington, Cletus Doby of Mcleansville, Floyd Doby of Greer, SC; sister, Mrs. Beulah Andrews of Whitsett; eleven grandchildren.
